Low Salt Diet
Low salt diets are designed to help reduce the amount of sodium in a person’s diet. This type of diet is recommended either to prevent high blood pressure or to help lower a person’s blood pressure level. A low salt diet also has a positive effect on a person in other ways. For example, a person’s cholesterol (bad cholesterol) level is often reduced. Furthermore risk of heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems is reduced in patients who monitor the amount of salt they take in per day. A person who reduces the amount of salt they take in per day will also not retain as much water throughout the day. Likewise, people on a reduce-salt diet are likely to not be dehydrated as well. A person who is on a low salt diet is one who usually will consume less than the average of 2500 milligrams of sodium per day. Furthermore, they will watch how much salt they add to their food. In fact, they may use a salt alternative such as sea salt (although the benefits of such are highly debated).
Sea Salt For A Low Salt Diet
Some people claim that sea salt is healthier for a person than regular salt. Therefore, some people use it for a low salt diet. This type of salt does have some advantages over iodized table salt. However, some sources suggest that seal salt is actually higher in sodium than regular salt. Therefore, it is wise for each person to do his or her own research before attempting to replace regular salt for a sea salt. It may be better in some cases to find other alternatives for flavoring food, such as garlic or onion powder or other mild spices. Additional Thoughts The easiest way to reduce the amount of sodium in a diet is to cut out foods that contain preservatives and stick to making homemade foods whenever possible. If you don’t have time to cook for yourself all the way you may be able to find foods that are partially prepared that contain low amounts of salt. Furthermore, there are quite a few foods that are not made into low sodium or low salt versions that you can buy. For example, some soups are now made this way, as well as many different types of dressings and sauces.
